Two of our games worlds have collided for the first time in Gameloft history! Asphalt 8: Airborne and Gangstar Vegas have come together for a special crossover event that’ll allow players to get a glimpse into each other’s universe.
There’s a special Gangstar Season pass in Asphalt 8: Airborne featuring Jason, the hero of Gangstar Vegas, and Ramona, his one-of-a-kind car with a soul! Meanwhile, Gangstar Vegas is hosting an Asphalt-themed time-limited event where players can recruit a new Asphalt Champion avatar and Vegas Strip Racer car.
Asphalt 8: Airborne and Gangstar Vegas may seem like two completely different games at first glance, but they share more similarities than you might think. Their competitive nature, thrilling races, and incredible stunts (to name a few) made them the perfect choice for a first crossover collaboration.
What happens in Vegas, comes to Asphalt
One of the biggest features in the crossover event was Jason and Ramona’s presence in Asphalt 8: Airborne. To accomplish this, it required the team to go back to the source.
For Jason, the source was the key art from the launch of Gangstar Vegas back in 2013. The Asphalt 8: Airborne team used it as inspiration for their concept art of Jason, which conserved his iconic rebellious look, before passing it over to their 3D artist Yevgeniy Hrybanov to create a digital model.
Yevgeniy actually worked on Gangstar Vegas and Jason years ago, but this time, he was able to expand on Jason’s distinctive features and add details that he was unable to before due to technical limitations at the time.
The team also gave Ramona, both her car and soul models, the same special treatment and attention to detail.
The artists modeled her car form after the Nissan Datsun, which was the inspiration for her model in Gangstar Vegas, and the game designers took care to preserve the sensation of getting behind her wheel. The sound designers even added a reworked version of her engine in Gangstar Vegas!
Ramona’s soul manifests itself as a holographic woman in Gangstar Vegas, and the Asphalt 8: Legends team stayed true to their vision. Similar to the creative process for Jason, they created a model based on her initial concept before sending it to their animators and programmers. Together they created Ramona’s soul model to appear, act, move, and disappear exactly like she does in Gangstar Vegas!
The perfect crossover
Both the Asphalt 8: Airborne and Gangstar Vegas teams went to great lengths to convey the special details in each other’s games during the crossover event. “It was a full-scale development of a custom solution for a custom case,” said Anna Rysakova, Asphalt 8: Airborne’s Product Marketing Manager. “It involved almost each department of the team to bring about a very unique and desired experience to our players.”
Everyone was invested in the crossover event, and the collaboration between them couldn’t have gone better. Ekaterina Diachenko, Gangstar Vegas’ LiveOps Specialist, said both Kharkiv-based teams were excited to be able to work together and were full of ideas on how to bring a new perspective to their games. They hope their players enjoy the crossover event as much as they did creating it and find a new appreciation for their games!
