Asteria Rani, Communications Specialist at Gameloft Yogyakarta, has been with us for almost 10 years now!
Originally hired as a submissions specialist, Rani applied for a role in the Communications team in 2015 and has been bringing her passion and energy to animate the studio with various initiatives ever since.
Find out more about her job and the great advice she has for people who want to break into the gaming industry below!
Hi, Rani! Tell us about yourself.
I started my journey at Gameloft Indonesia at the Yogyakarta studio in 2012 as a submissions specialist. I was a blank slate with zero knowledge of the gaming industry, but I’ve grown a lot over the years. My role expanded to include the organization of staff events, and this gave me the confidence to apply for the for communications specialist position.
I officially joined the Southeast Asia (SEA) Communications team in 2015, which makes almost 7 years of being in charge of the studio communications, including the organization of internal and external events.
I like to keep myself busy all the time by either working or chilling. In my free time, you’ll find me binge watching series, listening to music, playing puzzle games, hanging out with friends, and occasionally singing in a music gig.
What is your role, and what do you enjoy most about your job?
My work covers the studio’s internal, external, and corporate communications.
Together with the communications assistant, I manage the staff events, corporate social responsibility program, media relations, merchandising, press releases and other copywriting, including studio-level communications such as the newsletter. I also support other departments and Gameloft studios with any communications-related needs.
I enjoy every part of it, but especially the opportunity to deliver creative ideas for different events or initiatives. The job is even more enjoyable now that the Global Communications and HR teams are building a stronger network and culture of sharing! I get to meet teams from all around the globe and expand my knowledge in the field of communications.
What are some of your most memorable moments at Gameloft?
This is a tough one. Frankly there have been too many memorable moments here! But if I have to choose one, it would be the business trips to Saigon.
They were normally once a year for an HR and communications seminar, and I really miss meeting the SEA Communications team in person and working together for 1-2 weeks. What makes it more memorable of course were the team dinners and team building activities after work and the chance to explore the city.
What advice do you have for people, but especially women, who want to work in gaming in a similar role?
In general, I think to succeed, you have to have faith in yourself. I am a strong believer that everyone can do anything if they start doing it instead of worrying that they might fail.
Just keep in mind that everyone learns new things at a different pace. You might learn slower or faster than others, but it’s okay as long as you are still moving forward. Focus on the potential for success rather than failure.
The gaming industry is a dynamic environment, and the trend keeps changing, so you need to monitor the movement and adapt to it. Build your network of colleagues and learn from each other. Listen to feedback and criticism and grow from them, especially when they come from your supervisor or another expert. Learn from as many different sources you can find!
As a woman in this male-dominated industry, do not be intimated. You should be proud to be a living proof that the gaming industry is not for a certain gender—it’s for everyone! Always give your best at work, push yourself to constantly learn, and inspire others to follow your path of success.
